Mount Pleasant High School Field Hockey Midfielder Shelly Ross is this week's WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
Ross and the Green Knights went 2-0 in the Turf Bowl at the University of Delaware.
Shelly scored the game winning goal in overtime against Appoquinimink on Friday Night,
and assisted on both goals in a 2-0 win over Concord Saturday. Which does Shelly prefer,
the goal, or the assist?
"I prefer setting someone else up for a goal. I think that it's my job as a
midfielder to really distribute the ball to my other teammates on the field."
A midfielder also has defensive responsibilities. The Green Knights are the only
field hockey team in Delaware to not allow a goal, something Shelly says comes down to
teamwork.
"A lot of it is mental, we have a really strong bond, the team. Everyone really
works well together."
Shelly has an athletic background, how did she get started in Field Hockey?
"My mom played when she was younger and a lot of my friends were trying it. I had
actually been playing soccer since I was four years old so I thought it would be an easy
transition."
Shelly will graduate after this school year, what are her future plans?
"Attend college, I'm not sure where I'm going to go yet, but I thinking about
starting a career in nursing and hopefully playing field hockey."
