Smyrna High School girls’ basketball player Betnijah Laney is this week’s WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
The senior scored 27 points in the Eagles’ 49-47 victory over St. Vincent Pallotti of Maryland in the New Castle Insurance Championship game at the Diamond State Classic.
Laney, last year's Gatorade Player of the Year in Delaware says she's worked hard to improve her game.
"I started working on my jump shot. Consistently shooting 100 shots because when I was playing with the U.S. team I was playing the 2 (shooting guard) and that's where my points would come from."
Smyrna lost to Sanford in the title game last year. Laney says that's driving her and her 8-0 team.
"We're really hungry because this is my last year, I'm graduating, so I don't have another chance at winning the state championship."
Laney had a chance to play for a National Under 17 team this summer in France. Laney said it was an honor to represent the US and gain valuable basketball experience.
"It meant a lot because I was doing something positive in representing our country. It helped prepare me for what I'll go against at the next level because it's greater competition than what I face in high school."
ESPN.com ranks Betnijah as their 11th best prospect in the country. What is she looking for in a college?
"My major will be something in business or early childhood education. I want to have my own day care center. The three schools I'm considering at this point all have great academics and are great business schools."
