St. Mark's girls' lacrosse player Haley Schweizer is this week's WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.

Haley scored a hat trick in a season opening loss to Maryland power Fallston Day School. Haley said the team learned a lot from quality competition.

"We don't grow apart, we don't get mad at each other. It helps us come together, and then usually a win after a tough loss helps and we came out and did it against Middletown.”

Speaking of that Middletown game, Haley tallied 6 goals and 1 assist in the Spartans' 13-7 victory over the Cavaliers on Saturday.

Haley says a double hat trick can come quickly if things go right.

"I guess once I score one or two. If I can get the draw myself, I can get it and keep going, but I try to look upfield once I get the draw and pass, but if nothing's there I just go."

St. Mark's lacrosse is a Schweizer family affair. Remember that Middletown assist? Haley's sister Taryn is also on the team, and it just starts there.

"Actually in the last game I assisted her and she scored. She's assisted me a few times. My older sister Courtney who is now at (Johns) Hopkins, Taryn and her played together and they assisted each other all the time too."

I asked Haley what it's like to have a sister on the same team.

"It does get kind of annoying sometimes, I have to admit. But I love playing with my sister. You know there's always going to be someone there for you when you lose, when you win, when you do something good, the first congratulating you. I'm always going to have someone there for me. And the fact that she plays defense and I play midfield and offense it kind of works together, and I love having my sister on the field.”
