VIDEO: Interview with Julie Macedo
Wilmington Charter's Julie Macedo is this week's WDEL Female High School Athlete of the Week.
Julie broke the course record while winning the Lake Forest Invitational in Felton Saturday.
Macedo had an early indication things were going well.
"I knew at the mile that I was feeling good, if I could keep it up, I would have it. I came through in 5:30, and I just needed to be at 5:40."
The accomplishment was magnified by an injury Macedo suffered to her leg which cut her summer track season short, but not her training.
"I really got a lot of swimming and biking in. In late June I was able to start running and I built up to 45 miles a week so I got a lot of base in."
45 miles is over the equivilence of 1 1/2 marathons, why does Julie love running so much?
"I'm good at it. It's something you can see a lot of improvement really quickly. You can see improvement when you work hard and you don't see it when you don't, so it's very rewarding.
Julie says she hopes her hard work leads to a spot on an SEC team's roster next year, where she would want to major in Kinesiology.
"Being an athlete I'm really in tune with my body, and I like biology and exercise and those kind of things."
