VIDEO: Profile of Jon Welch
Caravel Quarterback Jon Welch is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.

Welch threw for 164 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for another 36 yards in the Bucs 31-19 win over St. Elizabeth at Delaware Stadium last week.

Jon says winning on Tubby Raymond Field helped rebuild the Caravel school spirit.

"It was an awesome feeling. Playing at UD was cool. A lot of our fans were there, and a lot of kids from our school supported us. We earned the respect back from our school, or classmates, not just Delaware in general."

Jon Welch has turned a 2-7 team last year around, and welcomes the expectations that come with being the quarterback.

"When we win it feels so good. When we lose it sucks, because everything is on you, all the pressure is on you. When we win it feels good and all we've been doing this year is winning."

While Jon doesn't have an NFL quarterback he patterns himself after, he says he's worked hard to become more mobile this season.

"I throw on the run really well I feel like. I've got real quick feet. I'm not the fastest guy, but I'll definitely make a play on my feet this year. I got a lot stronger."

Jon says he's talked to schools from Division I-AA to Division III, but says engineering is one of several possibilities for a major.

"Math is probably my strongest subject. I've always been told I'm really good at match since I was a little kid."
