Tatnall cross-country runner Reagan Anderson is this week's WDEL Female High School Athlete of the Week.
Reagan was a surprise winner of the New Castle County championship race last weekend. She was sitting in 3rd place when teammate Haley Peirce and Charter's Julie Macedo each struggled in the last quarter mile, opening the door.
"I had no idea what had happened. I heard people screaming 'she fell down, you can catch them' it was all really confusing. When I passed Haley and when I saw Julie I realized I had a chance to do this!"
Reagan says the county championship win is a major accomplishment.
"Just to be able to win a race like that. That's the County championship, that's the biggest race in Delaware that we have. That was really cool because it was always something I've always wanted to do."
Reagan has won state titles with the powerhouse Hornets, while she says she was thrilled to win such a major race, she cherishes the team championships more.
"It's 7 of you, it's not just one and being alone. You're with all your teammates and having a group of girls who are all excited and proud of each other. You worked together for them for so long, it's an incredible feeling and experience."
Reagan also excels at shorter distances, including winning the state 800 meter indoor title last year. What gets her through what can be very long races?
"Sometimes I think of really random things, but in big races you want to finish well, so you're thinking about the way it's going to end and all the work you've put in just gets you through it."
