Sanford basketball player Sabri Thompson is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.
The junior captain led the Warriors to a pair of victories over Pennsylvania schools during winter break.
Sabri says a December win over Red Lion opened the defending champions' eyes.
"After that game, we saw how good we really are. Losing two seniors in Trevor Cooney and Deon (Jones), people were doubting us. Everyone got the confidence back, and we beat Red Lion, so we really are good."
With the 2 captains gone, Sabri is a leader on this Warriors squad. What did Sabri learn from Cooney who is now at Syracuse?
"I used to watch Trevor at practice every day. He's really a work hawk. I try to resemble myself after him. The way he shoots, I try to look after him because he was a very good leader."
Sabri says his role with the team has changed on the court, from a defensive force, to one who excels on both ends of the court.
"Over the summer I was at the gym every day except Sunday to take the break. I shoot over 500 shots a day, all types of shots. The more shots I took the better it got."
Sabri works hard off the court as well. While just a junior, Sabri says he'd like to major in engineering in college.
"Math is my favorite subject, and science and physics got me into it."
