Padua soccer forward Garcelle Alequine is this week's WDEL Female High School Athlete of the Week.
Garcelle scored a natural hat trick in the last 15 minutes of the Panda's 5-2 win over A.I. duPont Monday. She said she felt some pressure to break the late 2-2 tie.
"I knew that I had to score three goals in order for us to win. I working one-by-one to get the goal and focusing on trying to get it."
The Pandas will enter next week's state tournament at 14-0-1, and Garcelle says the team just missed a chance at the perfect regular season.
"We definitely wanted to get that 15-0, but the Charter game was 2-2 and we couldn't get it. We are definitely looking forward to playing them in the playoffs."
Garcelle says while scoring goals is important, she feels it's also vital to be a 2-way player on the pitch.
"It's about scoring goals, but it's also about defending. Defense starts in the front of the field and it works all the way back."
Garcelle says she's going to Lenoir-Rhyne in North Carolina to play soccer next year, and wants study nursing.
"I wanted to travel, and I like the idea of a free schedule and helping people as well."
