VIDEO: Interview with Amanda Rickert
Wilmington Charter cross country runner Amanda Rickert is this week's WDEL Female High School Athlete of the Week.
Amanda won the Lake Forest Invitational in Felton last Saturday, running 35 seconds faster than in the same race a year ago despite high humidity. She credits her success to her summer conditioning.
"Good as it is to get out of the heat, sometimes I would try to run in the heat to get used to it. I ran in the summer in the heat, and I drink a lot of water."
Rickert won her race by 38 seconds, but says the crowd helped push her faster.
"You just have to pretend someone is right behind you. Honestly people were yelling at me 'she's right behind you' even though she was 30 seconds back, and that was definitely helpful.
While she's glad she's running now, Amanda gave a humble reason for why she entered the sport of running.
"In 3rd grade I started running, but I think that was just because I'm uncoordinated, so that's why I started running because I couldn't do anything else (laughs)."
Amanda says some of her best running inspiration has come from former teammate Julie Macedo, who won her first race as a freshman at the University of Florida last month.
"You need to work your hardest. Even the little things count like doing abs and exercises after, all those things will help you. She was very dedicated and determined and that was good to learn from her."
