Hodgson running back Jeffrey May is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.
The two-way player scored two rushing touchdowns, and intercepted two passes in the Silver Eagles' 35-7 victory over Appoquinimink last Saturday.
May says there was a major key over the summer that helped them in the season opener.
"How hard we worked. We take nothing for granted. We know they were coming in as a good season, and we didn't want another game like last year (1 point victory for Hodgson)."
While touchdowns may appeal to many high school athletes, May says he hopes Division II's top teams noticed how hard he worked on his defensive skills in the offseason.
"I worked as hard as I could this off-season at my d-back position. Like I said, I take it just as seriously as my running back or wide receiver, so I would like to make that statement."
Jeffrey said there were some early signs football might be his sport of choice.
"Growing up I was always playing with my little cousins and hurting them without finding out. A lot of people underlook the physicality, but that's what brings out the fire in me."
Hodgson has a longstanding tradition of football excellence, and Jeffrey says he takes his role as a team leader seriously.
"I just try to keep encouraging people to work hard. Hard work is the main focus here, so I try to let them know that if you work hard, it will pay off at the end."
