Middletown running back Jamar Baynard is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week
Jamar ran for well over 100 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Cavaliers' convincing 51-26 win over previously unbeaten A.I. DuPont last Friday.
The Cavs were wearing pink uniforms to "Beat the Beast" a campaign towards fundraising and developing cancer awareness. Jamar says he was honored to wear the uniform.
"You're playing for somebody, for a good cause, and raising money. It's not even for the game, but for the cancer cause."
As for the game, Middletown had 6 plays of 40 or more yards in the win. Jamar is quick to deflect the credit away from himself.
"First we've got to give it to the line because they're opening the holes blocking for the quarterback. The coaches are just giving us our opportunities and we've got to take advantage of them."
The rise of this current squad of Middletown players began 2 years ago, when they lost a half-time lead in the state championship game to St. Mark's. Last year they trailed Newark early before winning. He says those experiences have been key to their run of success.
"Coach DelPercio always tells us how to battle through adversity. Basically we just stay together and don't point fingers at anybody and stay as a team."
As for college, Jamar would like to get a Division I scholarship, and says he would eventually like to become a scout. To give him a test I asked Jamar to scout himself.
"He's a team player. He doesn't care about getting the ball as much as he wants to win."
Baynard may not be in a hurry to talk about himself, but hopes to put up big numbers when the 4-0 Cavs face off with Wilmington Charter Saturday.
