Concord High School Goaltender Austin Oakes is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.
The junior has been part of 13 victories by the Raiders this year, all coming via shutout. Austin is quick to share the credit for his success.
"So many times they've saved me and I've saved them, it's a brotherly thing on the defensive end. A lot of it also has to do with the offense, if they keep the ball then our job is easy, we don't do anything."
Austin has had to make several critical saves in tight 1-0 and 2-0 Concord wins. What makes a good goaltender?
"It's 70 percent instinct. If you don't have what it takes to be a goalie, you're not going to be a goalie. We're in our own brotherhood because we're all crazy in a way.
Austin's soccer career was almost de-railed after a pre-season training accident last year where he fractured his spine. He says it wasn't easy making the comeback, but says he had plenty of support.
"I was crushed last year. I couldn't play or do anything, but I came back and I was like 'am I even going to perform on the level?' There were a lot of questions on my mind, but it had a lot to do with my team and coaches saying they have faith in you and I just did my thing."
Austin says he hopes he can play soccer in college, and says he'd like to keep his toes in sports by getting into broadcasting or sports management.
"I like being around teams and I like the whole aspect of a team and being together. I just want to keep close to my roots of sports because I love it."
