VIDEO: Interview with Ursuline's Laura Hurff
Ursuline Academy's Laura Hurff is this week's WDEL Female High School Athlete of the Week.
The basketball guard scored seven points in the opening quarter of Ursuline's 58-27 victory over No. 3 Sanford Wednesday night.
Laura says the surprisingly decisive outcome was thanks to an early run.
"When we got that 16-0 run (in the first quarter) is when we really realized we can finish this and finish it strong as long as we keep our intensity up. We needed to make sure we play team basketball because that's what was helping us (Wednesday) night."
Hurff's shooting has improved this season, and she gives the credit to head coach John Noonan.
"After practice he makes me stay after and shoot with a volleyball so I make sure I get my shot up higher. I have to do that with foul shots so that I make sure it's softer so he's helped my shot get a lot of touch."
Laura Hurff is even better at field hockey where the junior has verbally committed to play at Syracuse, and was named to the USA's Under-17 National team that will play in Holland this summer.
"When of my goals for later in life is to make the Olympic team, so making this National team really shows me that if I keep pushing myself that I could have the chance of making the Olympic team later."
While she has the Olympic aspirations, Laura says she would like to become a veterinarian in the future.
"My grandfather has two horses and I love going up there to spend time with the horses. He also has dogs and dogs are my favorite animals and I just want to help animals."
