Salesianum swimmer Matthew Stasiunas is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.
Matthew won four gold medals in various freestyle events at last weekend's DIAA State Swimming Championships.
The senior says one championship had a personal connection to him.
"The most memorable was the 200 freestyle considering Rory Connell is a coach of mine at Delaware Sports Team. It's a great honor to be put on the same (record) board as him."
Matt puts in multiple hours a day with the Delaware Swim Team, but he says things are pleasantly different when he sports the Sals' colors in the pool.
"You definitely don't get the same atmosphere in a Club environment because we're always working. From the high school kids you get the excitement of swim meets."
Matt says serving as a captain this season has helped him support his state championship winning team better.
"My leadership role on the team (has improved). At first I was the quiet kid, but I've started to take that leadership role to heart."
Matt is going to Penn State next year to swim, and says that football helped guide him to Happy Valley. As for a major, Matt says swimming played a part in that decision.
"Freshman year I took biology. I would like to go into physical therapy because of swimming so it kind of ties together."
