Charter School of Wilmington striker Calvin Smick is this week's M & T Bank WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.
The senior scored a hat trick in a 5-0 victory over Flight A rival Concord on Monday afternoon.
His highlight goal was a perfect 25-yard strike into the top corner of the net, and he says extra work paid off in that tally.
"We have practice every day after school, but I do go to the Newark turf every Saturday and work on free kicks like that last one. I also work on things that I didn't think I did well working the week I'll tune up for before our game on Tuesday."
Charter head coach Jon Gillespie says Calvin has stepped in nicely as a leader for his Force.
"He's a good captain for us this season along with Nicolas Musacchio. They're both very experienced players, and they lead by example, which is great."
Charter is 3-0 on the season, and Calvin says staying under control will be a key for the Force.
"Stay true to our system, play our game, and try to have everything crisp and running like a well-oiled machine."
Calvin hasn't chosen a college yet, but says he wants to play soccer, and also wants to major in Civil Engineering with the hopes of getting into bridge construction.
"The structures are magnificant in itself. I enjoyed the project where we built a bridge to see how much weight it could withstand and how light it was."
Charter has several big games next week including a meeting with Salesianum at home Thursday at 4pm.
