VIDEO: Interview with Abbie Mirabella
St. Mark's volleyball outside hitter Abbie Mirabella is this week's M&T Bank WDEL Female High School Athlete of the Week.
The senior had 29 kills in the Spartans' sweep of Charter in the State Volleyball quarterfinals Tuesday.
Mirabella, who has been a constant on All-State teams since her freshman year says it's been an exciting start to her senior year on-and-off the court.
"In volleyball it's been a roller-coaster. We've had ups and downs but we've worked through it. I'm having a lot of fun. In school it's been pretty even. I just got 2nd (honor roll) in my first quarter which is really great for me."
Abbie says she started playing volleyball around age 10, and says she's driven by the competition.
"The rush I get when I play good and when my team succeeds I feel so great afterwards. I push for my parents because they want me to succeed and all the things they put up with over the years."
Abbie has committed to go to Division 1 Maryland-Baltimore County next year, and says she wants to be a Behavioral Analyst thanks in part to her mother who works with Chimes of Delaware to help find jobs for those with special needs.
"I volunteer and go to work with her sometimes just to have fun with the buddies. They really make a difference in my life. You see how sweet people they are, and how much that want to work hard and how much they truly love you. It means a lot to me."
