VIDEO: Interview with Brent Fleetwood
Smyrna wrestler Brent Fleetwood is this week's M&T Bank / WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
Brent finished second in the 120-pound weight class at the Beast of the East Tournament last weekend, but says he enjoys the dual meet nature of wrestling.
"You're only as strong as the guy next to you. Coach (Kurt) Howell is a history teacher, so he's big on the Romans and Greek mythology. He always puts it into a warrior (mentality), you have to be able to lift up your shield and protect the guy next to you."
Brent started at Smyrna as a freshman, and says he's grown up through his four years in the program.
"When you're coming in you're the younger guy. Now we're the older guys and we're passing on what we know to them. It's more of a leadership role. Things are the same with the wrestling, I still want to be the best, we're still training hard, but you have to keep more things in mind, you have to be more mature."
Not surprisingly for a National Top 15 wrestler in his weight class, Brent started wrestling at a young age.
"This has been my life since I was 6. Ever since I can remember I've been wrestling. I don't want to make anything go to waste. My parents and coaches have a lot of time and energy put into this. I don't want to be that case where I could have been. I want to get to my full potential."
Fleetwood says he's considering advertising or journalism when he wrestles at Central Michigan, a school with a local connection.
"The team is a bunch of great guys. Their coach Tom Borrelli recruited Coach Howell, so there was interconnection right away."
