Video: Highlights and Interview with Hamrick and Coach
St. Georges' Quenton Hamrick is this week's M&T Bank / WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
The senior scored a season high 22 points in a 81-74 victory against conference foe Mount Pleasant this week.
Hamrick's head coach Rod Griffin told the forward before Tuesday's game that the Flight B competition would be taylor-made for his skill set.
"He did not disappoint me or his teammates one bit," said Griffin. "He stepped up, played hard on both ends of the court and had a phenomenal night. We needed senior leadership in a tough environment like this, and he absolutely stepped up for us. I'm very proud of him and all of our St. Georges' Hawks players because it was a team effort, but he was a shining star tonight."
St. Georges improved to 10-2 with the win against the Green Knights and Hamrick tells WDEL what it felt like at the end of the game.
"It was very exciting," he said. "We work long days in the gym, we work hard, we play defense, and today I just think we got a well-deserved win against a very good team."
He discussed what his strength is in the game of basketball.
"I just try to attack the rim," said Hamrick. "I just try to play my game. I didn't want to do anything outside of my game."
As a senior, Hamrick began practicing in the off season and has noticed growth.
"My basketball skills, I worked over the summer," he said. "Now, I guess it's just showing in the games."
The St. Georges Hawks preach family and togetherness, which is the reason why they have flipped the season around from just a year ago. Last season the Hawks finished 4-16, and Hamrick hopes St. Georges continues the current eight game winning streak.
"We play good defense," said Hamrick. "Offense will come and after that we could just make a run. Hopefully this isn't the end of it."
