VIDEO: Interview with Archmere's Amanda Olsen
Archmere Academy multi-sport athlete Amanda Olsen is this week's M&T Bank / WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
Olsen stars on the Auks' volleyball, basketball, and lacrosse teams, and says while she respects athletes who focus on one sport, that's not her style.
"I love playing three sports because as I love playing basketball, I love mixing it up a little playing volleyball and lacrosse. I'm probably going to play basketball and lacrosse in college, I love being busy."
Amanda has committed to play at Division III Catholic University next year, and says there are differences between the similar sports.
"Some people say that lacrosse and basketball are kind of the same thing with one having a stick and one has a ball. But basketball is my favorite because you're constantly running up and down the court, and that's my favorite thing to do."
Amanda's basketball coach Chris Zambito says while Amanda brings a lot to the table on the court, including 16 points in their tournament opening win over St. Andrew's Tuesday, her personality helps the team, and the coaching staff.
"We're pretty intense, so she keeps us loose also. She keeps everything light at practice and keeps the girls light when we travel. That will be a big part when we travel to Smyrna (in the 2nd round). She'll keep them loose during the day and before the game. It's a huge part of our team."
Her personality also shines off the court, as Amanda has volunteered her time with Special Olympics to help run sports programs, and says it's a win-win.
"We teach the kids how to play basketball, and I love helping them. It brings a smile to their face and it makes me so happy."
And Archmere has been happy to have Amanda Olsen, this week's M&T Bank / WDEL High School Athlete of the Week. In Claymont, SG 1150AM WDEL Sports.
