VIDEO: Interview with Chrishyanah Alston
Sanford sophomore Chrishyanah Alston is this week's M&T Bank / WDEL High School Athlete of the Week.
The guard scored 12 points in the Warriors' 58-37 victory over St. Elizabeth to claim their 3rd state title in the last 5 years.
Alston says she has fond memories from last Friday night.
"Just cutting down the nets and seeing the faces on our coaches, our families, and our fans, and knowing they were happy about our victory."
Chrishyanah's love of basketball started at age 7, but she says she wasn't a hoopster at first.
"There was a flier going around at my school and I was a cheerleader and a dancer. My father didn't take me serious with it. I played my game, and saw I really wanted to play, so we went to the park every day and he helped me with everything.
The Sanford sophomore says her game really improved when she made her first trip to an AAU tournament in Florida during her 7th grade summer.
"Being on the open court with a lot of people is kind of frightening at first. After a while you get used to it, then you go to other big tournaments and it's the same thing. You just play your heart out, like any other game."
Alston was named 2nd team All-State by the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association, and says she has aspects of her game to work on before next season.
"I would like to get my handling (as a point guard) better, because I'll be handling hopefully more than this year. Also working on my left hand (dribbling) and my jumpers."
