Caravel softball pitcher Holly Brooks is this week's M&T Bank / WDEL Female High School Athlete of the Week.
The sophomore pitched the Bucs to a 2-1 record in three difficult games last week.
The loss was a 9-inning battle with Laurel ace Regan Green that Brooks says made the Bucs better.
"We knew it was going to be a tough game going into the game. Every year it's a battle, so we were ready for it. We came up short, but that happens. That was a great time, but I think that we really showed what level we can play at.
Holly's pitching was strong last week, but she also added a pair of doubles in Saturday's 3-1 win over Delmar. She says she tries to take what she learns in the circle into the batter's box.
"As a pitcher I almost feel I have an advantage because I know what the umpire is calling, and I know how to work a batter. I know mentally how to get into the box."
As for her pitching, Holly says her current success didn't come early, nor easy.
"I started in Little League, and I was pretty rough. I would practice often in the backyard with my Dad. It was a struggle. I didn't like practicing at first, but as a pitcher it's really something you have to do because if you don't do it, you're not going to improve."
While just a sophomore, Holly Brooks says her softball goals have been lofty.
"I've been dreaming of playing college softball since I was little. It was actually a dream to play Caravel Softball when I was little, so it's all just been a journey and everything has been working out so far and I've loved every minute of it."
