VIDEO: Interviews with Tara and Rose Carr
Conrad rowers Tara and Rose Carr are this week's M&T Bank / WDEL Female High School Athletes of the Week.
The Newport Rowing Club member sisters finished first in the double sculls race at the Mid-Atlantic Junior District Championship Regatta in Princeton Junction, New Jersey earlier this month.
Older sister Tara, a sophomore said it was a neck and neck battle until they pulled away for the win in the last 300 meters.
"I could see out of the corner of my eye where they were. I think I said 'just let loose." I think I just shut off my mind and let my body do it. I knew my body could do it, so I just had to shut off whatever was holding me back, and we connected and went."
Rose Carr, a freshman, says their team is made stronger by the fact they are sisters.
"It's really helpful to have her there. She does all of the brain work. I don't want to let her down, but we both have all of the same goals. We just want to perform and do well."
To reach their top form, the Carrs are on the water at 5:30am several days, and Rose says a lot of good comes out of waking up early.
"It's worth it because it's really pretty on the water, and the end result is really special. You do it because you love the sport, and you want to win."
Tara Carr says one of the best parts of rowing is that it can be a lifelong endeavor.
"After college, and after whatever I'm going to do, I don't know how I'm not going to row. I don't know how I'm not going to do it. I'm just going to do it the rest of my life."
The Carrs will compete in the USRowing Youth National Championships in Rancho Cordova, Calif. on June 13-15.
