With the firing of Delaware football coach K.C. Keeler, how secure is Monte Ross as the men's basketball coach? This is Ross' 7th season and last year's 18-14 record was his first winning mark. This year the Blue Hens were picked to finish 2nd behind Drexel in the CAA and at this point, the record stands at 11-12 overall and 6-4 in the league.
Northeastern has just one loss in conference play and has already beaten Delaware at the Bob, and right now appears to be the favorite to win the depleted CAA tournament.
Most people seem to think Ross will need to win the CAA tournament and advance to the NCAA tournament to keep his job but even that would be a hollow victory. Only 7 schools are eligible for the tournament and the league's power rating has dropped drastically with the departure of VCU and the down year for the rest of the league.
Old Dominion and Georgia State can't play in the tourney because they are departing the league while Towson and UNCW are ineligible because of academic issues. That leaves a disappointing Drexel and George Mason, as well as Northeastern as the only realistic teams to keep the Blue Hens from a meaningless championship.
One bracket projection I just saw today had the CAA champ as a 16th seed, a lower seed than the America East champ. That means a matchup with a Duke or Indiana or Michigan...and a quick exit.
Monte Ross is a very nice man....but 7 seasons and just one winning year is a bit much. Even if the Blue Hens make the NCAA tournament, a strong case could be made to replace him.
It seems like a long time ago that Mike Brey was walking the sidelines in Newark and selling out the Bob Carpenter Center. We need to find the next Mike Brey.
