Maybe the question should be why no US publication is filling this role?
The short answer because the US media are complacent and lazy, "reporting" only what gets handed to them. If Watergate happened today, the Washington Post would wait for an official statement, then find somebody on the other side to disagree and let it go at that. Nobody else would mention it.

That was a very interesting article...and it explains well at least some of the reasons why our US media have become useless for real news....

Good question...it seems the Guardian is trying and I believe Breitbart.com is doing it as well...but we need more guards for the guardians.
