Sean Barney will primary Chip Flowers

Once, Chip Flowers had eyes on higher office (Governor?).

Now, the embattled Delaware state treasurer will struggle even to retain his current office.

Onetime policy director to Governor Jack Markell & onetime senior aide to Senator Tom Carper - Sean Barney - went on Twitter at 6 a.m. to officially declare his candidacy for state treasurer.

This is an anticlimax: We had been hearing for months that Chip Flowers likely faced a Democratic opponent, and that opponent would be Barney.

No question: This is the Delaware establishment coming after Treasurer Flowers.

Barney earned his bachelor's degree from Swarthmore College, a law degree from Yale, and a master's in public administration (economics, public policy) from Harvard.

Barney enlisted in the Marine Corps after 9/11; served in Fallujah, Iraq, where he was wounded in action; awarded the Purple Heart.

Barney says he'll run a positive campaign. (But that wouldn't stop surrogates from reminding people about the blemishes in Flowers' record.)

Let the campaign begin. Let's see if Flowers can argue that the establishment is out to get him precisely because he has exposed the inherent non-transparency of the Delaware Way.

The Delaware Way out to get him? Flowers is an embarrassment to himself and to the state. That said, Mr. Barney sounds a bit overqualified. I well remember when the state treasurer did not even have to go to college. That was when the Delaware Way still existed.

With those education creds, Mr. Barney may be using this first elected position to gain a foothold in elected office, so he can later seek higher offices such as Governor, Congressman, Senator, and who knows, maybe years from now, Delaware's first U.S. President. It will be interesting to learn more about Sean Barney, and watch how his political career unfolds. So maybe the "Biden Dynasty" may be coming to an end IF Sean Barney's as good at serving the public in elected office, as his education appears to be top-notch.

The choice is clear: Rodney King or Barney Fife.

Kavips: Do you know more than what Allan posted about Sean Barney? If not I don't get you equating a man with his schooling with Barney the Dinosaur. I know, from things you've posted prior, that you like Chip Flowers and believe he's not been given a fair deal, but why dump on an unknown person, unless you know more about him we all don't. So if you do know more about Mr. Barney please enlighten us.

Or is your issue that Chip Flowers is Black and Sean Barney is White? I'd like to think that is NOT the case, since I'd expect you to be outraged if any of us were favoring Barney over Flowers because he is White and Flowers is Black. Discrimination is wrong no matter which side practices it.

Mike. I don't think it matters in today's society if our treasurer is black, white or purple... The question is: Can he count?

Kavips: That is an important question, but also is he honest and trustworthy? It seems that Chip may not be, or the problems he had wouldn't have happened. So my guess is Barney can count, and I'll bet he even knows the "I love you, you love me" Barney song too. So that should make him a better person for the job than Flowers, even if Barney is purple.

Very good points, Mike, all of them. I might just vote for him too. It would at least make sitting through the Cash Management Board meetings entertaining....

Did anybody ever consider making the next treasurer a Republican?

'A Republican'? Sure, if that person is a credible candidate. Last one was Colin Bonini, a legislative buffoon. Which is the only reason Chip Flowers won. All I know about the new guy is that he's a 'financial planner'. Some of 'em can count, and some of 'em can count at the expense of their clients.
