November is National Diabetes Month, and the National Institutes of Health want sufferers to be aware of a common and debilitating complication of the disease.
Dr. Suber Huang chairs the National Eye Health Education Program's Diabetic Eye Disease Subcommittee, and says regular eye exams are an important way to catch diabetic retinopathy early.
Dr. Huang: "In addition to having dilated-eye exams every year, people should take their medicines, reach and maintain a healthy weight, add physical activity to their daily routine, control their blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, and they need to kick the smoking habit."
