|January is Glaucoma Awareness Month, and an expert says what you don't know about the condition can hurt you.
Dr. James Tsai with the Yale School of Medicine says glaucoma, which damages the optic nerve, isn't just one thing.
"Glaucoma is a group of diseases that is one of the leading causes of blindness and visual impairment for Americans and many people worldwide."
Tsai says glaucoma is often stealthy as it does its dirty work.
"The scary thing about glaucoma is oftentimes, the disease is asymptomatic--that is, patients do not have any warning signs or symptoms."
He says early detection is important, and that means you should visit an eye doctor every year or two for an exam including a glaucoma screening.
