VIDEO: WP's Schneider - WDEL Female HS Athlete of the Week

William Penn field hockey forward Renee Schneider is this week's WDEL Female High School Athlete of the Week.

Schneider keeps a balanced scoresheet with 5 goals and 4 assists for the unbeaten Colonials. Which stat does she prefer, a goal, or an assist?

"Definitely when you score yourself, but assists are right up there with it because you helped create that play, and the win is a team win, not yourself."

William Penn plays Tower Hill this week, and also will play at UD's Rullo Stadium later this season. How does Renee feel field hockey changes on the artificial surface?

"There's different skills you can use on turf that you can't use on grass. Our team has learned how to play on turf because we played camp at Bloomsburg and played on turf. A lot of our scrimmages are on turf, and a lot of us play indoors, too. We're a pretty good turf team."

Renee says she started field hockey at around age 10, thanks to her family.

"My older sister definitely helped me a lot with how to play, what to do, stickwork, and hits. When I was in 5th grade, there weren't many programs you could do so she just hit in the backyard, she helped me out a lot."

As for life after William Penn, Renee says she's looking at Division II and III schools to continue her field hockey career, and potentially a career as a special education teacher.

"I'm in the 'Peers' program here at William Penn. The kids brighten your day, and I think it would be interesting to work with them every day."
