VIDEO: Smyrna's Fleetwood - WDEL Male HS Athlete of the Week
Smyrna wrestler Brent Fleetwood is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.
The sophomore pinned his way to a pair of victories in Smyrna's dual-meet wins over Salesianum and Pennsville (NJ) last week.
The reigning 103-pound state champion says he's made one simple change as he tries to defend his title.
"I'm in better shape this year, I'm more used to the 2-2-2 (minutes per round). Last year I wasn't used to it and I was a little out of shape, but this year I'm doing pretty good."
Brent says his conditioning work is not just limited to his hours on the mat.
"I run a lot. A lot of wrestlers run just to lose weight, but some of the best wrestlers run for cardio. It gets you in better shape.
Fleetwood has won a lot of big matches in his young career, including a 4th-place finish in the Beast of the East this year, but says he's not immune to getting butterflies in his stomach.
"I usually get nervous before a big match, but I've been doing it for a while. Once you shake hands (with your opponent) you forget about your nerves."
Once the match gets underway, Brent usually excels, and says one piece of advice helps him in the big matches.
"My best defense is my offense."
