VIDEO: Ursuline's Jenkins - WDEL Female HS Athlete of the Week
Ursuline Academy bowler Rakia Jenkins is this week's WDEL Female High School Athlete of the Week.
Rakia signed a letter of intent to join the varsity bowling team at Southern University in Louisiana next year. She earned the recognition despite bowling not being a varsity sport in Delaware, a fact she says keeps people from playing the sport.
"I think it's because they won't get any recognition for it. Making the sport a varsity sport probably helped them along and opened up doors."
Rakia's top score in a game is 280, she says she remembers being a little excited going into the game.
"I had some coffee that morning. I was really hyper and excited and I was bowling really well and hitting the pocket perfectly, so I was like 'I'm just going to keep this going."
Bowling is a game of consistency, and Rakia says she can tell nearly immediately if a strike ball has just left her hand.
"It's just a feeling you have. Most of the time I actually do have that feeling, but other times I don't, but I still get the strike anyway."
As for life off the lanes in Baton Rouge, Rakia says she's interested in becoming a neurosurgeon.
"I like the brain, but I don't know why. It fascinates me in all of its aspects... and I like to help people as well."
