VIDEO: Wesley wraps up regular season with rout

Wesley College posted its first shutout of the season in grand fashion, winning a Senior Day tilt with Newport News Apprentice 47-0 at Miller Stadium in Dover.

In front of a crowd of 1,312 after playing its previous two games in California and Alabama, the Wolverines punted on their opening possession, but then scored the next seven times on offense to continue their dominance over their former conference rivals.

Following a punt return by Sean Hopkins which put Wesley in Apprentice territory, the Wolverines marched 40 yards on seven player, capped by Askia Jahad's two yard touchdown run to go up 7-0.

Apprentice would quickly go three and our, and Matt Barile took a speed sweep 3 yards, joking a defender and beating him to the corner to double the lead with 2:04 to go in the first quarter.

Ryan Gerlitz's kick-off floated high in the air, and Apprentice's Rashawn Sims made a diving catch at the two yard line, downing the ball in the shadow of their own end zone. On the next play, safety Jared Morris lived up to his position, tackling running back Ralick Lockett in the end zone for a 2-point safety.

The Wolverines took the ensuing free kick and again quickly rolled down the field, ending with a 15-yard pass from Justin Sottilare to Brandon Robinson to take complete control at 23-0.

Touchdowns by Steve Koudossou on a reverse that he then reversed fields on again, getting a block by Sottilare on the way, and Matt Barile on a pass from the quarterback were sandwiched by a Dan Tryon 26-yard field goal to lead 40-0 at the break.

The teams agreed to play with a running clock in the second half with the exception of timeouts and injuries, and in 36 real minutes, only Jeremiah Howe's 45 yard screen pass catch and tightrope down the sideline for a score changed the outcome.

Wesley led from start to finish for just the second time this year, paced by Sottilare's 14-of-18, 222 yard passing performance. 11 Wolverines combined to rush for 139 yards, while 10 receivers caught passes.

Defensively Sosthene Kapepula collected 2.5 tackles for losses amongst 7 stops, while safely Jared Morris picked up 2 tackles in the backfield as well. Sean Hopkins also notched an interception, while Dyamond Ruffin forced a fumble which was recovered by Leon Jones.

Wesley will take next week off, and await its playoff fate when the committee announces the Division III Tournament Field Sunday afternoon. Wesley will almost certainly make it's 8th straight playoff appearance.
