VIDEO: State shows support on Veterans Day
November 11th is a day of honoring our nation's military, past and present, and on Sunday the state hosted a ceremony at the Delaware Memorial Bridge Plaza for vets doing just that.
Attorney General Beau Biden, who served with the Army National Guard in Iraq, points to a quote from President George Washington.
"When George Washington said, 'The willingness with which young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive veterans were appreciated and treated when they come home.' At points in our history we've forgotten George Washington's words. The men and women of the Vietnam-era in this tent know that all too well. We can never forget that," said Biden.
Biden says he considers supporting our veterans an issue of national security, as it encourages youth to serve their country when they grow up.
Senator Chris Coons says that while other states don't have Veterans Day events with as high a turnout as we have here in Delaware, honoring our military shouldn't stop there.
"Nothing is more important than remembering that the young men and women who we have sent overseas all come home bearing the burdens of their service. We owe them a lifetime of support and care," says Coons.
Coons reminds the crowd one way to assist vets is with providing them opportunities. There will be a job fair for military and their spouses on November 15th from 9 a.m. to noon at the Walter L. Fox American Legion in Dover.
