Wesley to open D3 playoffs at home
Wesley College's road to Salem could take an eerily familiar path after the NCAA Division III National Tournament brackets were released Sunday night.
The Wolverines are the unannounced two seed in the "Mary Hardin-Baylor Bracket" and will face ECFC Conference Champion Mount Ida (Mass.) in the opening round Saturday at Noon in Dover. Wesley and Mount Ida have met once in the past, with Wesley winning a 43-6 decision back in 1999.
The winner of Wesley's game would face the Framingham State (Mass.) at Cortland State (N.Y.) victor, with Wesley hosting if they advance past the Mustangs. Last year Wesley was a two seed and defeated Hobart and Linfield to advance to the regional final.
Should Wesley continue to advance and seeds hold, Wesley could travel for a regular season rematch with Mary Hardin-Baylor, a team that defeated the Wolverines 32-25 in Dover back in Week 2. Last year Wesley held on for a 27-24 decision in Belton, Texas.
The other half of the bracket features Mount Union, meaning that whoever wins the Mary Hardin-Baylor bracket would have to go to Alliance, Ohio, a trip that ended Wesley's season a year ago.
The other number one seeds are Linfield, a team that fell to Wesley in the second round a year ago, and St. Thomas.
Defending national champion Wisconsin-Whitewater finished with 3 losses and will miss the tournament, after playing against Mount Union in the last 7 Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowls. This year's championship game is scheduled for Friday, December 14 at 7pm in Salem, Virginia.
