Wilbur Elementary students top the list again in JDRF fundraising
An elementary school in Bear has raised more than $8,900 for juvenile diabetes research.
Students at Wilbur Elementary raised the cash, with first graders responsible for coming up with more than $1,200.
Principal Beth Howell says the effort is a personal one for the youngsters, who've used the fundraiser as a means of getting involved in other community projects.
"We actually have three students in our school who have juvenile diabetes, and so we wanted to increase awareness last year, so we started the walk in order to do that, and from that, our students have really gotten on board in different ways in trying to help the community; we've done some food drives, and things like that."
State Senator Bethany Hall-Long attended the event on behalf of her fellow lawmakers and of Governor Markell, who's proclaimed November Diabetes Awareness Month in Delaware.
