VIDEO: Murray's walkoff TD sends Caravel back to championship game George Murray caught a game winning touchdown catch on the last play of the game to send Caravel back to the Division II state championship game in the Bucs' 43-42 win over Indian River Friday night. The two teams were playing a rematch of last year's Division II state championship game, which Indian River won. Scoring started in the first quarter with Indian River driving when Quarterback Marquel Knight ran for a 52-yard run for a touchdown and the early 7-0 lead. The Bucs responded on the next drive, when Caravel's Darnell Savage, who scored 6 touchdowns last week, ran for a 24-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. Caravel made it a 7-point lead at the end of the period, when running back Pierce Ripanti ran it in for a 3-yard TD to put the Bucs up 14-7 heading into the 2nd Quarter. A blocked punt gave Indian River great field position with under 5:31 left in the 1st half to set up a 1-yard run by Aaron Moore for touchdown that retied the game at 14-14. Knight would intercept a pass on the ensuing drive that set up his 2nd touchdown of the game, a 1-yard run that put the Indians up 21-14 heading into halftime. The Bucs tied the game again in the 3rd Quarter when Savage scored his 2nd Touchdown of the night on a 24-yard run to make it 21-21 with under 7 minutes to go. But Jalen Griffin gave Indian River the lead on a 3-yard run to put his team back on top at 28-21 into the 4th Quarter. Caravel faced a big 4th and 25 with under 7 minutes left to go but Bucs QB Derrick Groomes scrambled down the field for a Touchdown and the Bucs take a 29-28 lead on a two-point conversion. However the advantage was erased on the kickoff when Moore took it down the sidelines for an 85-yard TD return, two point conversion good, to Indian River back in front 36-29. Caravel answered on the next drive--Pierce Ripanti scored 19-yard TD run, two point conversion good, and the Bucs took a 37-36 with under three minutes to go. Indian River was driving deep in Caravel territory with less than a minute remaining in regulation when Knight pushed his way to the goal line, where the ball just broke the plane on his 6-yard TD run. However, he would be stopped on the two-point conversion attempt, Indians take the lead at 42-37. The last drive of the game saw Groomes connecting with Murray on a big pass that put Caravel on the 8-yard line. Then with four seconds to go Groomes passed to Murray in the endzone, completing the pass out of bounds. However, a defensive holding penalty gave Caravel one more shot. Groomes looked for Murray again, who pulled down the pass to seal the win at 43-42. |
