WPD: Armed felon arrested on gun possession charges
Wilmington police say a K-9 unit helped them arrest a convicted felon on gun charges.
It happened just after 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning when police heard shots fired in the area of 3rd & Connell Streets and encountered Kalief Ringgold of Newark.
Police say officers began talking with Ringgold as part of the investigation and when he voluntarily exited the vehicle, officers saw a handgun underneath a seat in the car.
Police say Ringgold then tried to run and ignored their commands to stop, even after being told a nearby K-9 unit would be deployed--the suspect was brought down by the dog, allowing him to be taken into custody. He was treated at Wilmington Hospital.
Officers executed a search warrant for the vehicle and found a loaded .38 caliber revolver and 28 grams of marijuana.
Ringgold, who has prior robbery, firearm and felony drug convictions, faces charges of firearm possession by a person prohibited, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana. He's being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $14,500 cash bail.
