Two Delawareans getting free surgery at Christiana Care
A Hockessin woman is one of two Delawareans who will be getting free surgery Thursday Christiana Care.
WDEL's Amy Cherry explains.
"It's painful every day and every night," says 59-year-old Sharon Tobias.
She suffers from advanced osteoarthritis.
"I have bone on bone," she says.
She's hoping Thursday she'll see an end to the excruciating pain since she's getting a free knee replacement surgery at Christiana Care through Operation Walk USA.
"It was almost unbelievable. It was like it was too good to be true, and it's a great opportunity for somebody like me, who has no insurance encase otherwise I would not have been able to get this done, and would had to have lived with the pain," says Tobias.
And it's a pain she's not sure she could endure much longer
"It's to the point, where I would've been happy to have my legs amputated, it's gotten that bad," says Tobias.
For now, she's getting just her right knee replaced even though she needs both.
"I know I'm going to feel 20 years younger." she laughs. Tobias hopes to qualify to get her other knee replaced next year.
Tom Costello of Newark, who's unemployed, will also undergo free surgery Thursday to replace his hip.
