Delaware lady hoopsters take road win without Elena
Delaware's defense held Rhode Island to 28 percent shooting in the Blue Hens' 57-40 road victory Wednesday night.
The Blue Hens, playing without Elena Delle Donne, who continues to battle the effects of Lyme Disease, scored the first seven points of the game and stretched their first half lead to 14 twice before leading 28-16 at the break. URI was just 5-for-22 from the field in the opening stanza.
Delaware nearly matched their first half start by opening on an 8-2 run to go up 36-18, and boosted their lead to 22 on a Lauren Carra three with just under 12:00 to play before cruising to the win.
Carra led the Hens with 16 points and 5 assists, while Danielle Parker notched her third double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Delcastle alum Jacquetta May scored 10 points while Akeema Richards added 9, who played for the 5th time in 6 games without their All-America center.
Delaware returns home on Sunday afternoon for a battle with fellow mid-major power Princeton at 2pm. Delaware won in New Jersey over the Ivy League champs 61-50 last season.
