VIDEO: Wilm. Christian's Hickman - WDEL Male HS Athlete of the Week
Wilmington Christian basketball's Nate Hickman is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.
The senior has the Warriors off to a 4-1 start, including scoring 20 points in a season-opening win over Appoquinimink.
Nate says he's taken more pride in his passing this year, knowing the depth of his team will be a key to making a state tournament run.
"When we see better teams that have more defenders and offensive players, we're going to need everybody involved in the game. I know I can put the ball in the basket at almost any point, so if other people are doing it too we're almost unstoppable."
The Warriors have been one-and-done in recent tournaments, but Hickman says last year's early exit has been motivation.
"Every year we get a little bit stronger, but I think last year it really hit hard for us. This summer we had more people in the gym working on their game. Even in fall league we had more people working hard."
Nate says he has inspiration to help put in the hours needed to be one of Delaware's best players.
"I guess it's just God telling me I need to play basketball. Whenever I want to give up I can't, I can't give up, I can't stop playing and am always smiling when I'm working out or playing."
Nate says he hasn't made any decisions on colleges or majors yet, but says he loves his forensic science class at Wilmington Christian.
"It's an easier science to pick up because you're not getting as deep into the biology and the chemistry. You're just on the surface trying to figure out what normal people with normal brains can figure out."
