VIDEO: Wilmington police officer shot in Southbridge
A Wilmington police officer is in serious, but stable condition after being shot in Southbridge.
It happened at 3:50 p.m. Sunday afternoon on the 1200 block of Peach Street, where police say patrol officers pursued an SUV that fled a vehicle stop. After the vehicle stopped, at least one suspect opened fire, striking one of the officers.
Police say two suspects have been taken into custody and are being questioned by detectives.
Police say the wounded officer, Patrolman Justin Wilkers, is a three-year member of the department. He had surgery at Christiana Hospital.
Both Mayor Williams and Wilmington Police Chief Christine Dunning visited the wounded officer at the hospital.
The investigation is ongoing and Williams has scheduled a news conference regarding the shooting for 11 a.m. Monday morning. WDEL's Amy Cherry will be there.
