Former student of Pope Francis weighs in on beliefs, past
A man who studied under newly-elected Pope Francis says the leader of the Catholic Church is a humble but also very orthodox.
Mario Paredes, Presidential Liasion for the Roman Catholic Ministries American Bible Society studied philosophy under Jorge Bergoglio in Buenos Aires.
"He knows the issues of the church extremely well, and he presents the true teachings of the church with clarity, no compromise," says Paredes.
However, Paredes also says Bergoglio was also respectful and a "sweet" human being. He also wouldn't rule out whether Pope Francis would adopt more modern views on issues like artificial contraception later in his papacy.
He says critics of Bergoglio's leadership of the country's Jesuits during Argentina's Dirty War are unfairly judging him.
"The confrontation East and West is gone, and clearly to judge, the Pope today, with the eyes of those days is real anachronism," says Paredes.
