VIDEO: Howard's Woody - WDEL Male HS Athlete of the Week
Howard basketball's Larry Woody is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week.
The senior guard scored 16 points in the Wildcats' 81-62 state championship victory over Sanford earlier this month.
Last year Howard was eliminated by the Warriors in the quarterfinals, but Woody said a more focused team entered this year's field of 24.
"We were underestimated by Smyrna, beat them, and made the Bob, and weren't focused on winning the next game (against Sanford). This year we were like 'okay, we made here, we have to do more than just get here, we have to win games."
Larry was named 1st team All-State by the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association, but says his initial thoughts when learning about the honor was on his teammates.
"At first I was disappointed because I wanted a couple of my teammates, I thought they should have been higher (on teams). We were all proud of each other and we respect it so it feels good."
Head Coach Chris DiMascio says Larry brought a great energy to his Howard squad.
"Larry was always the guy you looked at and he always had a smile, he never worried about things, he got back to work the next day. I wish him the best for his future, and I'm sure he's going to do well."
The State Championship was Larry's last game in a Howard uniform. Will he miss high school basketball?
"A little bit. I still do basketball here and there, but I miss the team as far as practices and the games every week. Yeah, I miss it."
But Howard didn't have to miss the excitement of a state championship thanks to Larry Woody. He is this week's WDEL Male High School Athlete of the Week. In Wilmington, SG 1150AM WDEL Sports.
