VIDEO: Markell, Equality Delaware rally for marriage equality
Gov. Markell and state lawmakers join Equality Delaware to urge University of Delaware students to support their push to legalize same-sex marriage in Delaware during a rally Monday night.
WDEL's Tom Lehman has more.
Markell had a clear message for the crowd of about 200 students and marriage equality supporters.
"If you promise to do your part to make sure a marriage equality bill reaches my desk this year, I promise you: I will sign it," Markell says.
Markell urged students to voice their support for legalizing same-sex marriage in Delaware to others and said the movement could fail without their assistance.
"Although there's plenty of momentum around the country, and it's going great across the country, and I believe it's growing great in Delaware, I believe it's not a done deal," he says.
Mark Purpura, president of Equality Delaware, believes legalizing same-sex marriage in Delaware could happen in 2013, during a time when he says national support for marriage equality is growing. Delaware could become the tenth state to legalize same-sex this year if legislation is passed.
"We think that we can make a lot of progress this year in Delaware," Purpura says.
Markell was also joined by Lieutenant Governor Denn, State Rep. Paul Baumbach while Senator Coons and Attorney General Beau Biden reaffirmed their support for marriage equality in video messages aired at the event.
