Patient concerns over Planned Parenthood investigation
The Delaware Division of Public Health's investigation into Planned Parenthood is Wilmington is causing a patient outcry.
WDEL's Amy Cherry has more.
"She called me crying today."
That's Mary of Wilmington, who says her daughter only found out through media reports that Planned Parenthood in Wilmington was under investigation for alleged unsanitary conditions.
She had used the clinic for a routine pelvic exam within the last year.
"I'm just outraged that the people, that were treated in Planned Parenthood in Wilmington, that may've been exposed to HIV or hepatitis as these nurses are saying," she says.
Amelia Auner with Planned Parenthood tells WDEL they did not notify patients about the investigation, and DPH's Jill Fredel says they're not obligated to by law.
"It would be premature to say that we would close the facility or that there are any unsanitary conditions that existed," says Fredel.
She adds, if DPH thought patients were at-risk, they would contact them.
"Clearly, if public health closes any clinic, there would be an obligation by the clinic to notify its patients," says Fredel.
Mary is a nurse and says this would never happen at her medical office.
"I mean, you're putting someone at risk here, and you're not even letting them know there's a danger," she says.
She says her daughter contacted the family doctor to get some blood work done for testing as a precaution.
"I'm really surprised that not only were they not notified, but no one can give them any guidance as to what kind of testing they should have to make sure they weren't exposed to any of these kinds of diseases when they were a patient there," says Mary.
A statement on Planned Parenthood of Delaware's website from new CEO Ruth Lytle-Barnaby says the Wilmington clinic has launched a review of patient services that includes some staffing changes.
