VIDEO: EdWatch: Widener Law launches criminal justice program for vets

Military members returning home and considering a change in career path have a new option.

WDEL's Amy Cherry tells us more about in this week's WDEL Delaware EducationWatch.

Widener University School of Law isn't just for lawyers.

They're introducing a criminal justice program targeting veterans returning from war.

"This is an unserved community and now that many of our veterans are coming home, we want to do something that accommodates them as they come back," says Eileen Grena-Piretti, Assistant Dean and Executive Director of Institutes at Widener Law.

The online criminal law certificate program can help veterans already working or seeking to work in law enforcement, corrections, or border patrol.

The curriculum for the Criminal Law Certificate in Executive Leadership and Justice includes: intro to criminal law, law criminal justice and ethics, research and writing for justice professionals, we're going to put in grant writing; we're going to put in leadership and executive management," says Grena-Piretti.

She hopes the convenience online classes will help the certificate program go global.

"Very accommodating - you can do this course anytime a day, 24 hours a day," she says.

But just because the course is online, doesn't mean you're missing out on the bricks and mortar aspect of being in the classroom--that's attainable through video conferencing.

"Every other day our faculty are online with you so that you can see the other students that are online with you, and you can also see your faculty," says Grena-Piretti.

Students enrolled in the course can are also invited to come to Widener Law for some facetime.

"They can come use our law library, they're more than welcomed to come to any of the functions that we offer here at the Law School," she says.

She says in part the program is about giving back.

"So let's take care of them as they come back here and serve them with more practical skills and more education," Grena-Piretti says.

Tuition is $14,000 for the certificate program. Enrollment closes on July 1, 2013 with classes beginning in the fall.
