Wesley's five-sport athlete earns top conference honor
Balancing just one varsity sport with a college courseload can be overwhelming for many student-athletes, but Wesley's Tristin Burris has excelled with an athletics schedule few have ever managed.
The Polytech alum graduated this spring with a 3.98 GPA in Media Arts, while accumulating a staggering 20 varsity letters over just four years, and was honored recently as the Capital Athletic Conference's Woman of the Year.
There are only three college seasons, so Burris had to double up quite bit, playing field hockey while running cross country for all four falls, and spending three springs balancing lacrosse and outdoor track. In addition she ran winter indoor track for four years, and played two seasons of softball.
"When I'm in the classroom I try to stay focused on my class work . When I'm on the field, that's when I want to stay focused, I really don't mix the two. It's true 'be a student before an athlete' but I don't see why you need to draw a distinction between the two."
Burris says she sneaks as many as three running practices a day around her team sports to stay in condition, and she says it really helps when she steps on the lacrosse and field hockey fields.
"Any time I go into my team sport I never feel tired. I don't remember even one time over the past four years a game where I ever felt tired from running, it's never been an issue. I think it comes from the extra running practices and time I put in."
With her college athletic career behind her, Tristin says she's interesting in pursuing a career as an art teacher, and perhaps opening her own art gallery one day.
Tristin is one of three Delaware college athletes to earn her conference's "Woman of the Year" honor. University of Delaware women's basketball star Elena Delle Donne is representing the Colonial Athletic Association, while Wilmington University softball's Katie Warrington is the Central Athletic Collegiate Conference's top pick. All three are now eligible for the NCAA Women of the Year Award.
