Markell gives potential illegal contributions to charity
Governor Markell gives tainted campaign donations to charity.
Markell's office tells the Center for Public Integrity, he will give $28,000 received from Jeffrey Thompson, an embattled Washington D.C. businessman, to several charities including the Boys and Girls Club of Delaware.
"He's an accountant. He also owns a Medicaid, managed care organization, and he's not been charged with anything, but several of his associates have for giving straw donors, which are illegal donations to campaigns, but they're later reimbursed for," says Alan Suterman, a Money & Politics reporter with the Center for Public Integrity, which broke the news.
Federal prosecutors have called Thompson's former accounting firm an "assembly line" of illegal donations.
Markell joins several other politicians including President Obama and Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, who've returned or donated portions of campaign contributions tied to Thompson.
