VIDEO: UD men picked 4th in CAA
Delaware guard Devon Saddler earned 1st Team All-Conference honors and the Blue Hens were picked to finish 4th at the CAA Media Day in Baltimore Wednesday.
The Blue Hens, coming off a 19-14 record and a trip to the league semifinals last season, graduated Jamelle Hagins and Josh Brinkley from their front court, but return three of the league's top guards in Saddler (19.9 points per game last year) Jarvis Threatt (13.0), and 3-point threat Kyle Anderson (9.0).
6-foot-9 Carl Baptiste will look to build off of a 4-point, 4.2-rebound per game average, with sophomore Marvin King-Davis figuring to see additional time.
Head Coach Monte Ross, whose 19 wins a year ago was the most in his seven seasons at Delaware, has high expectations for freshmen Barnett Harris, a 6-foot-9 product from Monroeville, Pa. and Devonne Pinkard from Lancaster, Pa. who he calls a "standout" during early drills.
Saddler was named 1st Team All-CAA last season, after earning 2nd-Team plaudits in 2011-12. The 19.9 points ranked 18th in the nation, and he reached double figures in all but one of the Blue Hens' 33 games a year ago. His 1,670 career points is 2nd amongst all returning players behind Creighton's Doug McDermott.
Towson is picked to win the league this season, with their forward Jerrelle Benimon, a Georgetown transfer, picked as the league's Preseason Player of the Year.
The rest of the first team are all guards, Damion Lee and Frantz Massenat from Drexel, Marcus Thornton from William & Mary, and Saddler.
Jarvis Threatt was picked to the CAA's 2nd Team after earning a 3rd Team nod after last season.
Delaware opens with 11 of their first 13 games on the road, including trips to Villanova, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. The showdown in South Bend will be the first against former Head Coach Mike Brey.
The two home games are November 10th against Charleston Southern, and November 30th when Robert Morris comes to Newark.
