VIDEO: St. Mark's rallies past rival Ursuline
St. Mark's rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Ursuline in five sets on Senior Night in their home gym Monday evening.
The hosts seemed to have things in complete control early, claiming the first set 25-19 and taking a 12-8 advantage in the second before Ursuline rallied, taking their first lead of the 2nd set at 18-17 on a block by Stephanie Drake and Dakota Raymond.
Eventually the set went to extra points, with Caroline Francois capping off a three-point flurry at the end with a push kill over the Spartans' defense for a 28-26 victory.
The third set would go even longer, as Ursuline won 29-27 courtesy of some fine defense on St. Mark's hard-hitting attacks.
Madeline Hughes put Ursuline up 11-8 in the 4th set on a kill before St. Mark's was able to knot the set at 15. St. Mark's took a 20-18 lead before taking back to back points thanks to a block by Megan Quinn and Addison Reich, and then a kill by Abbie Mirabella. The senior would slam home two more points later to help take the set 25-21.
Mirabella then left no doubts in the final set. With Reich serving, Mirabella and Reich combined for either a Mirabella kill or Reich ace on six straight points, jumping ahead 11-3 before evening out for the 15-7 triumph.
Despite finishing with a 4-11 record, Ursuline took St. Mark's (12-3) to five sets in both meetings this season.
Mirabella led the way with 40 kills and 24 digs for St. Mark's, with fellow captain Claudia Seemans dishing out 62 assists along with 14 digs.
Ursuline's fantastic defense finished with 99 digs on the night, including 30 by Libero Erin Joyce.
