Delaware drug testing lab under scrutiny
State police have launched an investigation after authorities discovered discrepancies involving drug evidence sent to the state medical examiner's office for testing.
Authorities said Friday that the investigation began earlier this month after officials with the Department of Justice discovered that evidence was missing during a criminal drug prosecution.
State police said a subsequent investigation, including internal audits of police evidence lockers, detected discrepancies involving several law enforcement agencies in drug evidence submitted to the medical examiner's Controlled Substances Lab and evidence returned to police.
State police said investigators were looking at drug evidence being tampered with, missing, or substituted.
Authorities said drug analysis by the lab has been suspended, but an official with the medical examiner's office said he expects lab operations could resume early next week.
